To collect data about past climate, scientists go into the field to gather physical, chemical, or biological samples, which are later analyzed in the lab. Sometimes this field work involves going to remote locations like the glaciers of Antarctica, caves on remote islands, or traveling on large sediment-coring ships in the ocean.
